Paving the Way for AI

Prepared by Peter Lichang Kuo

At a recent multilateral conference, someone pointed at our invention and said without hesitation: "This is basically the best application field for AI!" What he saw was absolutely correct. As to Taiwan - Silicon Valley and "AI" (artificial intelligence) seem to be closely linked. Everything happens shall be for a reason. Here I am trying to record its cause and effect and look forward to the future.

* “Global Channel-TES ”— Our Invention won the best practice at APEC

Reviewing the past and learning the new is a good way to create tomorrow's industries. When I was looking for old information on the development of the e-commerce industry, I was surprised to see two books "Home Computers" that I bought in the United States 46 years ago. There were already talking about "Artificial Intelligence" (AI) in the books, and saw that the author Rich Didday wrote in Silicon Valley in 1976 : "You don’t think general purpose intelligent robots will be on market next week." This sentence is still used today more than 40 years later, especially as “AI” becomes more and more popular.

* The books bought in America 46 years ago

The author of the book "Home Computers" asked himself a question at the end: "Are computers like brains?" He answered that "They are all information processors!" It seems this is a common misunderstanding. As the matter of fact, computers are really just cold information processors. If one hard drive is not enough, another one will be stacked on top of each other until it becomes a container yard. However, the human brain is God’s masterpiece, with tens of billions of neural units. As long as a person concentrates his mind, he can ride on the clouds, take the sun and moon, and travel across the universe. The human brain is an organization with a strong "emotional" component. It can transmit something called "LOVE", which is definitely not comparable to computers.

* Computer Versus Human Brain

Recall on November 1965, when I dropped out of the municipal junior high school to accompany my father to Kaohsiung, I brought a blank notebook with me and wrote down the problems I encountered every day before going to bed. Then silently said: "If there is a God, give me the solution!" Often the problems were solved the next day, and I could make money for my parents to spend when they were worried and frustrated. The most bizarre thing was that after passing over the gloomy year of 1966, I actually met all the stringent requirements of an American Electronics Corporation (NYSE listed as Avnet Inc.) and did business with them in December -- of course, that blank notebook already filled up to full.

I once spent less than a month writing a report on solving working environment problems for an American firm Mattel. General Manager Mike Daley came back from Philippines and read it, he said that "You can get two doctorate degree in environmental protection from the United States for this report." Looking back, with my current abundance of knowledge and experiences, I may not be capable to meet requirements with Avnet Inc. over again; nevertheless, as long as there is "LOVE" in brain, there is any potential may be stimulated.

After two good years from 1967 to 1968, I earned enough money to build the first house for the Kuo family, my family had been overturned by evildoers for 37 years. When everyone happily moved into the new house, I had to take another blank notebook and write down, "The vacuum tube has been eliminated. How to face the impact." Every day, I had to help Mr. Chen Yong-tian of Yong-Fu Electric Company in developing new products for "free", and meanwhile I must find ways to make money for the dissolute person to spend; at this very moment, the heavenly God actually brought a Japanese, Mr. Tzukuta, who came to Kaohsiung Export Processing Zone to open Kyowa Electronic Company, and just developed new products for him for a “fee”. Not long after, I received NT$ 1.2 million. There would be no results if I gave the money to that dissolute person, so I used it to buy a couple of lands, the most expensive of which was "NT$ 30 per square meter", expecting for future development after I completed my military service.

However, the family scandal continued to release, and my father often pulled me to nag that "I want to be a president. I don't want to be looked down---” It was so annoyed that I had no choice but to build a “Baisen Metal Industrial Co., Ltd.” with 8,000 square-meter at No. 8, Lane 360, Chong Cheng South Road, Yong kang, Tainan in 1972 and gave him a position of President.

* The Baisen factory is still existed

Originally, there was only one "Cheng-yi Carton Factory" in Lane 360. Their President, Mr. Chang Li-tang, came over to say hello. Unexpectedly, he was elected as the mayor of Tainan the next year. Coupled with many factors, our relationship became closer and closer. He mentioned that he would establish a sister city relationship with “San Jose” in Silicon Valley, California, USA. After our efforts, we and San Jose actually became a sister city.

* Chang Li-tang—Taiwan-Silicon Valley Bridge Builder

When the Silicon Valley Delegation arrived in Tainan, they went to my house to talk about what future "Home Computers" would look like. I made some connectors for them as souvenirs, which could be used in future home computer or "Personal Computer" (PC) as back board. "Backboard Design" of electronic appliances can be regarded as an industry that Lichang Kuo has contributed to the world.

* Contributed Back-board design to the 3C industry

In early 1979, when Taiwan and the United States broke off diplomatic relations, I went to America to assist my client in developing satellite receivers. I went to Barnes & Noble Bookstore and bought a bunch of books. "Home Computers" perhaps bought at that time. In fact, the author divided it into two parts -- the first volume talked about "Hardware", and the second volume talked about "Software". The unit price of each volume was US$ 7.95. The hardware discussed in the first volume was, of course, "Robot"—that's what I'm best at

* The Robot Industry introduced by the author in the 1980s

The applications and flow charts discussed in the second volume were all drawn by hand. The author predicted that at the 1992 Craft Fair, he drew two people wearing “futuristic clothes”, holding modern 3C products and communicating in a traditional store.

* Futuristic people took modern 3C in store

In fact, when I gained the Certificate of "Black Stone Co." which license on March 13, 1979 in New York except for the standardized content, everything else on the form was "handwritten." This meant that on March 13, 1979, local governments in the United States were not using computers. Computers were just treasures kept at a constant temperature in high-end laboratories, and they were still far away from personalization of computers. However, when President Reagan was assassinated, TV stations began to use "Satellite Broadcasting", which prompted new entrepreneurs in the United States to step up, they made much efforts towards software and hardware to personalize computers. I finally spent 20,000 US dollars to buy an "IBM 5550" PC in 1985 -- the computer crashed before I could finish typing the A4 paper. If you want to use it, you have to learn programming, because the PC didn’t have a mouse yet.

Human beings always move forward through trial and error, and the shortcomings of the "IBM 5550" were quickly improved under poor user experience. In 1986, my wife Linda Din already founded a social enterprise (SEL), saying it was to solve unemployment. She spent NT$ 200,000 to buy a fax machine, and the purchased had to report to the “Taiwan Garrison Commandthe clampdown on technology. Moreover, in the later years of Chiang Ching-kuo's rule, LInda often saw reports of "Taxi drivers being robbed." Unexpectedly, she actually said that "I want to invent something that allows the driver to make money even though there is no cash in the car." She thought that this way the driver would not be robbed, but as soon as she said this, she was regarded as "CRAZY", and the diagram she drew (as below) heard even louder laughter, and of course she finally pointed the finger at me.

* Schematic diagram of e-commerce invented by Linda Din

After three years of hard work, journalist from the Economic Daily and Commercial Times came to visit in December 1989 and reported the next day: "SEL, which is famous for the production and sales of AV Connectors, will devote itself to the development of 'RF Transmitter'----" Later, we really brought "Contactless-tech" and "Cashless Transaction System" to the world, and further changed the commercial mechanism and micro transaction model in the 21st century.

* The Contactless Era attained by RF Transmitter

Since 1992, I have been looking for suppliers in the United States and have confirmed that American manufacturers have very poor hardware capabilities and can only do software. Fortunately, the "machine-machine" extensible markup language we need was accomplished in Silicon Valley. In terms of other hardware, the “TranSmart Chip” was achieved in France and the reading device was completed in Germany

* TranSmart chip card and its reading device (Toller)

After making suggestions to President Lee Teng-hui, he actually ordered the "International Automation Expo I" to be held at the Taipei World Trade Center in 1993. In the following years, Taiwan had the same number of robots as West Germany. We then strived at APEC 1998 for the bill of E-commerce-- called "Steering the E-Commerce".

* To gain the “Steering the E-Commerce” at APEC 1998

In order to demonstrate the TranSmart chip and its reading device for "Cashless" transactions, we specially integrated the functions of ATM and vending machine into a smart machine -- called "VAM" (Vending Automation Manager). "eStore" was assembled of VAM, and then "The eStore System" (TES) was continuously promoted through the APEC 1999 in New Zealand and the APEC 2000 in Brunei, and was admired by the economies as the paradigm of "Multilateral Trading System".

* Welcome Message from APEC 2001 in Shanghai

In 2001, the APEC host invited us to Shanghai to promote the ICT (Information Communication Technology) and IPR (Intellectual Property Right) that we initiated before and turned into the bills; we were also invited to Hangzhou and Beijing to explain the importance of TES to national development. Mainland China immediately formulated the "Moderately Prosperous Society Policy" and provided Sichuan for us to do pilot exercise of TES, hoping to get rid of poverty as soon as possible and move into a moderately prosperous society. Furthemore, We were invited to APEC in 2003 to contribute to "Address the Needs of SME Exporters". Our proposed "Global Channel-TES" won the best practice from 21 economies. The Joint Statement of the Ministers pointed out: "This will be the best guidance of the start-up for 240 million people .”

* To win the Best Practice at APEC 2003

The contents of our U.S. invention patents have become important documents cited by well-known companies such as IBM/Disney/VISA/Walmart; obviously, our inventions are highly academic. In addition to Taiwan's well-known banks, Mr. Huang Derui, director of the Science Park Administration, also came to learn: "What is TES!"

* The Director of the Science Park Administration came to see the demo of TES

When I was invited to attend the APEC CEO Summit 2006, I was arranged to stay at the Sofitel Hotel with the political and economic leaders of the economies; everyone was excited to learn about the progress of the "Global Channel-TES". When I distributed the leaflet of TES flow chart to everyone, the chairman of a well-known bank and telecommunication company simultaneously exclaimed that "What A Fascinating System!" After hearing a simple explanation, everyone believed that the US$10 trillion business opportunity proposed by my wife, Linda Din, was quite conservative. Later, during the COVID-19 epidemic, the volume of cashless transactions exceeded US$10 trillion per year.

* The eStore system integrated virtual and real

Actually, we have been attacked by the entities of corruption furiously for several years because we went to Beijing to prepared “Pilot Exercise in Mainland”; most people may have died long ago under those vicious attacks! However, by adhering to the Call from heaven, we survived from the difficult situations, and still made much efforts to achieve our mission goals. After the APEC CEO Summit 2006, visitors were still coming one after another. We didn’t care whether they're well-intentioned or evildoers. Even we're trampled by the corruption to nothing left, we still warmly greet visitors from all compass:

* President of United University came

* Professor of Ji-Nan University came

* Professors of Chang Jung Christian University came

We answered to all their questions, hoping to achieve the overall economic development through the power of the “Social Enterprise”; some of them were able to publish books and make money after being interviewed for half a day, and some of the copied articles even won awards from international journals, verifying our inventions with academic nature.

The most special thing was that my old friend Chang Li-tang led the team from Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology to understand the operation of the entire TES; We not only specially prepared PPT, detailed explanations, and physical demonstrations, but also presented books such as "A Daughter of Defense Employee" and "Open the Way for Next Generation" so that they could return home with a full load and secure their position as a leading private technical university. Obviously, our invention was indeed full of strong academic flavor.

* Chang Li-tang led a team from Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology to visit

Ever since I helped Tainan Mayor Mr. Chang Li-tang establishing a sister city relationship with San Jose, Silicon Valley, California in 1975, I have been going to Silicon Valley often; I even printed "Science & Future" into a newspaper called a "Newsletter", and took it to Silicon Valley to give it to my country people working there to help them understand international trends.

* A Sample of "Science & Future"

In September 1998, after we won the "Steering the E-Commerce" at the APEC podium, I went to Silicon Valley with a large number of copies of "Science & Future" in October to report this-- "the cross-century e-commerce industry" to everyone. At that time, a friend from Merrill Lynch Investment Bank suggested that "You should speed up to use your invention to go public as soon as possible."

* Preaching the Good News in Santa Clara

In fact, we had an office in Santa Clara, and I have been fond of reading ancient books since I was a child. This made me deeply aware of the truth of "making money before in war"; therefore, I was busy in preparing for the listing of the NASDAQ. Unfortunately, someone from the Ministry of Economic Affairs came to visit and mentioned that no one was stationed in the "Taichung Export Processing Zone" (TEPZ). They hoped that we could "support" Taiwan's economy, which was beginning to decline. Therefore, my wife, who has always been "good for the world", actually invested “NT$ 499 million” in TEPZ, which was rolling in yellow sand. We didn't accumulate our money well first, but became a money-splitting guy. This proved to lead to death, and the entire "Rich Taiwan Plan" has become a joke among those corrupt groups.

* Rich Taiwan Plan Turned into a Joke

Recently at an international conference, when I was explaining the diagram of "Global Channel-TES" in the leaflet, a friend from Silicon Valley suddenly realized and said that "This is basically the application field of AI !

* “Global Channel-TES” to change the world

Indeed so! Semiconductor manufacturers, which were originally in a slack time, we won the APEC Best Practice in 2003, and after “E-Commerce” began to become popular, they turned around like salted fish; when "Cashless" transaction systems became more and more popular, they were like flying dragons to the sky. As to our invention, they thought it is the best application example of AI for the following reasons:

The first is the demand for "Hardware" equipment, such as servers/storage equipment/network equipment/cloud computing infrastructure/information security equipment/monitoring and management systems/power management systems, and backup systems, etc., which all require semiconductors.

Secondly, the part was at "Software", including transaction information automatic communication management/intelligent supply chain management/order management/purchasing, sales and inventory management/data collection and storage management. Particularly, machines could learn from each other to provide users with best experience. These all required CPU/GPU or even TPU. No wonder, everyone will be surprised to find that TESour invention is the best application field for AI (artificial intelligence).

Third, we had already conducted "Scenario Planning" (Sand Table Deduction) in 24 years ago -- through the sales points "VAM & eStore" in Taipei, Taichung and Santa Clara, to test their four major functions as following: "1. Use Contactless TranSmart Card (Cashless Transaction), 2. Automatic Transmission, 3. Printing Invoices (tax payment), 4. Cross-border Trade." They will improve the performance and influence of AI in many aspects in the future. The following are some specific link methods and applications:

1. Contactless TranSmart Chip Card (Cashless Transaction):

AI can be used to enhance the "security" and efficiency of contactless payment systems, analyze transaction patterns through machine learning models, identify and prevent suspicious transactions, and reduce fraud; at the same time, use AI algorithms based on consumers' shopping habits and preferences. Provide a personalized payment experience. In addition, they have the four functions of identifying "numbers/ texts/ voices/ images", and AI can gradually improve the user experience.

* The manufacturing and application of TranSmart chip card

2. Auto-Transmission

AI can play an important role in automatic transmission, such as smart customer service, which uses AI chatbots to "quickly respond" (QR) customer inquiries to improve customer satisfaction and service efficiency; by analyzing user data, AI can help design and send personalized messages. Marketing information to improve precision marketing conversion rate.

* Auto-transmission via modem

3. Printing Invoices (Pay taxes):

We advocated "One eStore One Job" to provide job opportunities to single mothers or disadvantaged people to become store keepers. They can use AI remote monitoring to optimize invoice management and tax processing; for example, automated invoice processing: using optical character recognition (OCR) technology, automatically identifies and processes paper and electronic invoices, improves processing speed and accuracy, and reduces manual errors and legal risks; AI can help with big data analysis, allowing companies to better understand sales data and tax burdens, and provide decision support.

* Print invoices to increase government finances

4. Cross-border Trade:

We plan 30 markets, spanning more than 60 million square kilometers of land. AI can further promote the application of "Global Channel-TES" in multi-country trade and the expansion of the trading system; use AI to analyze global supply chain data and optimize cross-border trade. Border logistics and supply chain management, reducing costs and improving efficiency; AI translation technology can automatically translate transaction documents and communications from different countries and regions, provide multi-language support, and promote international cooperation; AI provides accurate information by analyzing global economic data and market trends. Market forecasts help companies formulate international market strategies.

We have spent more than ten years writing the "Transaction and Transmission Supply Chain Management System" (TSCM for short), which was included in the "87-89 Compilation of Research and Development Results to Assist Small and Medium-sized Enterprises". TSCM was a huge software management system-- Consumer took TranSmart Chip Cards approaching at VAM & eStore to purchase, the transaction information will be automatically remembered and transmitted. After the information was transmitted to the enterprise's control center for computing, the sales information would be distributed to suppliers/ logistics/ restocking trucks, and also be used for accounting affairs of purchase/ sale and internal auditing, etc. Unfortunately, on January 27, 2001, we were broken into— be robbed by the burglary—and all our research and development results were stolen. In the next years, we were unable to operate normally because persecuted by government. When I arrived in the United States, I simply started teaching classes-- "What is TSCM!" which helped TSCM flourish all over the world.

* Introducing “TSCM” in America

In short, "Global Channel-TES" provided application fields and promoted the vigorous development of AI. The integration of AI technology can greatly enhance the capabilities of participants in contactless transactions, automatic transmission and invoice management, while promoting the participation and optimization of multi-nations trade. This not only improving the efficiency and security of the system, but also providing more convenient and personalized services to businesses and consumers around the world. The point is, through social network analysis (SNA), it can be seen that all participants can be beneficiaries -- this is the mission goal of social responsibility investment.

* All participants in the network can benefit (SNA)

Friends in Silicon Valley pointed out that "There are more than 5 million disadvantaged people in the United States without bank accounts, and the U.S. market you are planning is only 1.892 million----" In fact, there are people in Taiwan who are also in this predicament, Therefore, as early as 1999, when Prime Minister Shiao Wan-chang came to visit, my wife Linda Din reported to him: "Taiwan can be prosperous through TranSmart Chip----" because the disadvantaged can improve their poor situations by serving as eStore keepers.

* To report the way of "Rich Taiwan" to Prime Minister

When you receive the Call from the Most High, you must move forward with all your strength! The development of new products in my field of precision industry rarely took more than a week, but the development of "RF Transmitter" idea alone took three years. A long list of other technologies and products all required a long time and efforts; for example, the "TranSnart Chip" shown to Prime Minister Shiao was not made in one go, but was made at a high cost but useless (as shown below). After improvement and debug, it then has the convenience and useful of today's people. However, those entities of corruption can quickly profit from our inventions simply by means of "stealing, burglary and robbing."

* Expensive but useless chips

Through try errors, we could build the entire system step by step and bring it to APEC to gain for a bill to benefit the world. An interviewer from Asia University once asked about "risks". I quoted the feedback from APEC political and economic leaders and answered them: "The biggest risk in inventing an e-commerce system is corruption!" In the future, a global public welfare channel system will definitely be formed, and it will still be a long way to go, and some of new products will continue to be developed to help the United Nations Climate Summit achieve the NZE2050 goal. The application of AI technology will shorten research and development time. Therefore, the risks posed by corruption must be considered and eliminated.

Just like the illustration in the book "Home Computers", in the early years we drew electronic machines by hand, hoping that they could be integrated and applied; now, with unremitting efforts, we can really see the results of integration -- just use The mobile communicator has the overall function. The "VAM" we plan that included software and hardware, and the "eStore" we plan has fixed and mobile types. The most important thing is to hope that the vulnerable groups can make world money at home through this commercial mechanism and become an asset to society; and AI's Application will make dreams come true.

* Early hand-drawn diagrams of electronic appliances

In fact, during the epidemic, the volume of "Cashless" transactions has reached US$36 trillion. If we had not dared to be the first in the world and not invested 499 million to build a factory in the TEPZ, we would have made full use of the resources at hand to entering the "NASDAQ" international capital market, our social responsibility investment results will promote a "W-shaped Society" with a win-win situation for "People/ Business/ Government". If the government collects one thousandth of it, it will exceed NT$1 trillion -- this can achieve considerable many charity work. Anyway, at the beginning of a new era, UNCAC (United Nations Convention against Corruption) has been keeping a close eye on the island, hoping that corruption will be eradicated and private power can create miracles again.

Peter Lichang Kuo, the author created Taiwan's Precision Industry in his early years. He was a representative of the APEC CEO Summit and an expert in the third sector. He advocated "anti-corruption (AC)/cashless/e-commerce (E-Com)/ICT/IPR/IIA-TES / Micro-Business (MB)…and etc." to win the international bills and regulations.
